What massage is the best for lower back pain?

Lower back pain can have many  causes – wrong posture, strain, injury, overworking the muscles etc. The sensation of pain  can be anything from an occasional ache to a debilitating and constant discomfort that affects a person’s work and home life. Acute lower back pain – pain that has has lasted less than six weeks in duration, may resolve itself with little or no intervention. However, lower back pain that is sub-acute or chronic (has lasted longer that six weeks)  is likely to require attention and care. Classic (Swedish) massage and Thai massage have been proven to relieve chronic lower back pain. Classic massage for lower back pain is a technique that relaxes muscles in the area through the application of pressure. Using hands,  therapist kneads, rubs, and strokes the affected muscles to increase blood flow (circulation) throughout the body. This, in turn, delivers oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and helps eliminate any acids or other waste products that accumulate there, thereby relieving pain. The area is rubbed in the direction in which blood flows back to the heart.
Thai massage, on the other hand, is a technique that pulls and stretches the area of the back.  Some back pain is caused by tight (shortened) muscles which pull on the joints, causing pressure and sometimes misalignment of the back. The combination of gentle massage and stretches in Thai massage relaxes and lengthens tight muscles. This takes pressure off the joints and allows them to fall back into proper alignment, reducing inflammation and pain.
